2009 Listening & Spoken Language Symposium FAQs
Q: What is AG Bell?
Q: What is Executive Function?
A: Executive Function (EF) is a critical aspect for children to learn how to learn. Vital to the development of problem solving, social competence and academic readiness, EF is a cognitive or thinking process that influences and controls behavior such as working memory, organizational strategies and inhibition.
EF begins in infancy, is especially rapid in development during early childhood, further develops in adolescence and peaks in young adulthood. Executive function involves the global coordination, integration and functional connectivity of multiple underlying brain systems used in speech perception, production and spoken language processing. Understanding EF can help professionals identify where cognitive breakdowns occur, and may also help highlight a child or adult’s areas of strength and talent.
